Start planning your speech early. Make sure if you can the leave plenty of time before the wedding. This will leave room to fix any mistakes and of course, time to practice reciting your speech.

But above all, do not rush it and think carefully. Remember this next important point… You do not have to write the whole speech in one sitting. ( Phew and excuse to take lots of breaks :) I strongly recommend this technique as you may find that ideas come to you over time. Plus the time away from your speech will help you to spot any little mistakes next time you read over it.

Step 2: Next, add a heaped cup of sincerity. This is one of the most important ingredient of any maid of honour speech. Emotion and honest is the secret seasoning to a powerful and memorable speech. Don’t be afraid to make a few people cry, and always remember to make sure the words come from your heart. This is key to concocting a speech that will be a screaming success and the bride will treasure.

Step 3: Add in a dash of humor. Tasteful and funny maid of honor speeches are guaranteed a hit at the reception. Mix up the emotions. I think a great speech is a bit like a roller-coaster ride. Step 5: When serving out you speech make sure you speak loudly and clearly. If you audience can not hear you they will get bored and restless and all your hard work and preparation will go to waste.

Also, try to keep eye contact with the crowd and project your voice around the room (but don’t worry to much as you most likely will have a microphone.) The eye contact will involve the audience and make the speech feel more personal, resulting in their full undivided attention.

Oh and my last quick tip on serving your speech….is to stand up. This may seem a bit obvious but this simple task can be very nerve wracking as you will be the immediate attention of that huge crowd. YIKES. But try not to chicken out as this really will help them to see and hear you and you speech will have the full impact and it will be one to remember. :)

Since you are reading this, you must be getting ready to be a maid or matron of honor soon. What an exciting, and stressful time!…  As the maid of honor, you obviously hold a very special place in the bride’s preparations and planning for her big day.

While you may find yourself caught up with all the pressure of the traditional responsibilities…you must remember to make sure you do not forget and neglect the Maid Of Honour Speeches.

If you are anything like me, then you may have been naughty and pushed this worrisome task to the back of your mind not thought much about the speech. In fact, you may have forgotten about it altogether (under the strain of all the other tasks that are expected of this can be very easy so don’t feel guilty if you have)!
Yep, I delayed my speech until the week before the wedding. YIKES, talk about leaving it last minute…So from my experience my first and probably one of my biggest tips  is – whatever you do, do not forget about the speech and wait until the last minute to prepare.

I wanted to write this blog to help all you maid of honour’s to be out there by providing some essential speech tips from a real life example. I am sure there are plenty of you out there who have to think about speech writing along with helping the bride prepare for the big day.

When I eventually realized I could not longer ignore the fact that I had to write a speech, I forced myself to get to work on it asap. It wasn’t long before it dawned on me that I had absolutely know idea where to begin or more importantly what was expected of me. It was not long before panic set in. I hadn’t a clue what to start writing down, and I knew I wanted the speech to be as perfect as could be, i was desperate not the let the bride down and ruin her big day and of course avoid embarrassing myself at all costs if possible. This was for my sister’s big day, and I knew that the speech had to go above and beyond just a simple toast.

After a long and grueling 3hours of a pitiful attempt of writing my maid of honour speech I reluctantly through up my arms and admitted defeat. I was totally at my wits end and was sure I was doomed to single handily wreck the wedding day with a shockingly bad speech, But it wasn’t until a kind friend made me realize something… I did not have to create the speech all by myself! In fact, I realized that there is absolutely nothing at all wrong with finding some tips and tricks to help me conduct my speech.

So I sat at the computer and set to work researching all I could on writing a maid of honor wedding speech.

Maid Of Honour Toast – Tips To Start you Off


As the date for my sister’s wedding loomed ever so close, I found myself still frantically attempting to write an inspirational, yet sweet maid of honour speech.  As with all Maid of Honour Speeches my aim was to wow everyone. This unfortunately was harder than I anticipated…. I eventually decided on a plan of action, to sit down and just jot down some of the many thoughts that popped into my head.

You may say that there are more efficient ways to plan your maid of honour wedding toast, but this is fantastic way to kick start ideas.

In the beginning i found my self a little dry for ideas. But when I got the idea of using speech prompts ad guides useful information came along thick and fast.

I  started to brain storm bits of information about the happy couple.

I jotted down, how they met, how i knew them, how long they had been happily together, some of our most special and memorable moments and funny sorties we have encountered etc. This exercise really helped me put into perspective and most importantly words, so excellent meaningful, factual and funny material that was going to give my Maid of Honor speeches an edge and make them unique.

A big tips of mine is that at this stage its best not to bother yourself to much about the order or content of your maid of honour speeches. The biggest hurdle is creating the perfect maid of honour wedding speech. Not necessarily writing it (crazy I know).

To summarize theses are my top tips to start you off.

Not only do you have to think of something funny, but something that won’t offend anyone in the audience. As my calling in life was not a stand up comedian, (far from it actually as i am a nurse) i panicked about how to write appropriate jokes.

You my be a naturally funny outgoing person who enjoys and finds it easy to make people laugh but trust me it is quite a different ball game trying to physically write out a joke. especially when there will be so many different ages and personalities at the wedding.

Plus as well as having a funny punch line you have to deliver it with confidence and at the exact right moment. Otherwise something that my be funny on paper just leaves your audience awkwardly ogling at you. Eek Just imagine what it would be like if all went wrong… and everyone just starred… Cringe. As I was desperate not to embarrass myself in front of all the people plus i didn’t want to ruin any chances of my sister having to impress her new extended family.

No no it was essential that I got it right. I needed tips. I needed guidelines. So i decided to search for some on the Internet for some advice. There’s plenty of useful tips and but the site i personally found most useful was……  It was a life saver really.

There re a few simple yet essential rules to stick by when writing, preparing your and delivering your Maid of Honour Speech.  To avoid embarrassing moments and guarantee your wedding Speech goes flawlessly then just keep to these easy tips.

  • Plan Ahead!!!

This is my absolute number one tip. When i was  maid of honour i foolishly left writing my Maid Of Honour Speech until a week before. BAD MOVE… The thought of writing it stressed me out  so much i kept shoving it to the back of my mind. Big Mistake! This only left me much, much more stressed. I thought a week would be more then enough time but anyone who’s been strongly involved in a wedding (which obviously you will be due to your role as a Maid Of Honour) knows loads of problems can pop up in that final week before the wedding. Thus leaving you tired and exhausted with not enough hours in the day to research and design a wedding speech the bride will be proud of.

So to recap – Not planing ahead means a lot of unnecessary amounts of stress and in less control of what you want to say. Luckily there are plenty of resources online for those who are in need of help and guidance. Whether you are looking for a romantic Maid Of Honour wedding speeches, a  funny or endearing one.

  • Include a couple of jokes.

If you think you can handle it then i is a good idea to add just a couple of relevant jokes. Even if you decide to go for a very romantic speech about the Bride and Groom, a couple of tasteful jokes will just add a little extra.A little bit of humour always go down well at weddings and will ensure that the audience pays full attention to you.

  • My Final DO is to always look out towards the audience when talking.

DON’TS – Key Tips On What Not To Do When Delivering Your Maid Of Honour Speeches.

  • My first Don’t is to not make your speech too long.

This is actually a positive thing because it means you have to write less YAY! But if  does get too long, no matter how amazing your weeding speech is the audience will get bored and fidgety.

  • Do not drink too much alcohol before your Maid Of Honor Speech.

One or two to take the edge off your nerves will probably be OK, depending on how you hold your drink. But Do Not not get drunk. I know it might seem difficult to do at a party, especially at a wedding where everywhere you turn there’s champagne. But unless you want to stumble over your dress or mess up your words and embarrass yourself  (don’t forget it’s going to be on tape) then i strongly suggest you stick too this simple rule. Just remember you will have plenty of time to let your hair down after the speech.

Here are some very essential tips of overcoming fears of speaking in public and having the right mind to deliver your fantastic Maid of Honour Speech. 8.) Imagine the outcome you would want. Think about the mother of the bride laughing at your jokes or sniffling and smiling at your childhood stories.

One thing that can happen to people that are intimidated and scared of public speaking is that they won’t project their voice. enough Even if you are not the most confident of girls, you can appear confident by adding volume to your speaking voice. Try not to let it fall because no one will be able to hear you. Try not to hold it too close to your lips or you will get a popping sound when you say your P’s.

14.) A must is not to get drunk before your big bridesmaid speech, tempting but can have disastrous outcomes. Tranquilizers aren’t a very good plan also. They will leave you with an inability to react to the present situation.

15.) Finally my last tip is… Don’t drink a lot of caffeine beforehand either. Caffeine is a nervous stimulant. It is the opposite of what you will want before speaking at the wedding reception.

That’s it. I know that seems like too many things to remember but most people will only need a few tips. But even if you end up forgetting all of these nerve busting tips do NOT forget this…. To have fun! If you look happy and as a though you are enjoying yourself people will not notice or not care if you make a blunder on your Maid of Honor Speeches. You will project out happy vibes ad your wedding speech is destined to be a success.
